Kevin Forrest’s stint with his hometown team came to an end just three months after it started.
Forrest, an Edmonds-Woodway and University of Washington graduate, was waived by Seattle Sounders FC on June 25.
The move wasn’t a big surprise for Forrest, who has been with the team since March 24 but has not been part of the 18-man game-day roster for a regular season game.
“It was an honor to make the team in the first place,” he said. “They signed me to give me an opportunity and I haven’t developed as fast as they’ve wanted. It’s the best thing for me, because sitting on the bench isn’t the best way to develop as a player.”
Forrest’s biggest moment as a Sounder came when he scored the game-winning goal in the second half of a U.S. Open Cup win over Colorado, the team that drafted him out of college.
Forrest said his next stop will likely be in the USL, and said he thinks he may end up with the Portland Timbers.
“It is disappointing, I was hoping to make my way on the team, but then again, it’s not fun sitting out every game and only practicing,” Forrest said. “It’s exciting to look forward to actually playing and playing in games that matter… This is definitely not the end of my ambitions to play at this level.”
Local golf pro competes in N.M.
Ryan Benzel, a teaching pro at Marysville’s Battle Creek Golf Course, shot a 3-over-par 74 on June 29 and is tied for 43rd with a 1-over total of 143 after two rounds of the PGA Professional National Championship in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.
Benzel had a round of one birdie and four bogeys at Santa Ana Golf Club after playing his first round Sunday at nearby Twin Warriors Golf Course. He is one of 87 players to make the second-round cut.
