EPSF breakfast fundraiser for STEM

The Edmonds Public Schools Foundation is saluting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math with a breakfast fundraiser 7 a.m. March 23 at Meadowdale Middle School, 6500 168th St. SE, Lynnwood.

The foundation aims to raise $50,000 to support teachers and students as they discover science and technology and how it applies to real-life applications. The funding will also pay for robotics and rocketry equipment and classroom supplies in support of the districtwide initiative to prepare students for rewarding careers in these high-demand jobs. Mountlake Terrace High School is becoming a STEM Magnet School and will offer the program to qualifying students this fall.

Dine out to support Type 1 diabetes research

Help support Type 1 diabetes research by dining out Feb. 21 at FIVE Restaurant and Bistro, 650 Edmonds Way in Edmonds.

The event is twofold: a party atmosphere while learning about advances made in Type 1 diabetes research.

Cost is $75 per person and covers appetizers, salad, entrée, dessert and wine, which will be donated by Milbrandt Vineyards.

The party starts at 6 p.m. with wine, appetizers and socializing; dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Dr. Bill Hagopian, of the Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute, will share his current research.

Boating classes with Coast Guard Auxiliary

The Coast Guard Auxiliary Edmonds Flotilla will be teaching two boating classes for experienced and novice boaters.

The first, Weekend Navigator, is an 11-week course on getting the most out of electronics and navigating in the Sound and off shore. This course starts Feb. 14.

The second, Boating Skills and Seamanship, is a study of all aspects of boating. This 12-week course starts Feb. 16.

February NARFE meeting

The January NARFE-Sno-King 1966 Chapter meeting was canceled because of snow and inclement weather. The scheduled speaker will be at this month’s meeting, 1 p.m., Feb. 16 at the Snohomish County PUD Auditorium, 21018 Highway 99, Lynnwood.

A social is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Patrick Hogan, special assistant to Congressman and Washington gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee, will speak about current issues.

AAUW February meeting

The American Association of University Women will meet at 10 a.m., Feb. 11 at Edmonds Community College, Snohomish Hall, Room 304A, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood.

Guest speaker and author Mary Lou Sanelli will discuss “Mothers and Daughters: The Life Cycle/The Mother Daughter Evolutionary Process That Lasts Your Lifetime.”

Garden Club workshop series continues Edmonds Floretum Garden Club will host its fourth in a series of Saturday workshops 10 a.m.-noon, Feb. 11 in the meeting room of Coldwell Banker Bain, 108 Fifth Ave. S in Edmonds.

Rita Moore from the Washington Native Plant Society will speak about “Native Plants for the Home Garden.”

Moore is active as an educator and advocate for establishing native plantings in the urban environment.

Dance the night away in Edmonds

Edmonds Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services is offering dance classes Saturday evenings. Join World Swing Dance Council-certified instructor Charles England from the Golden State Dance Teachers Association at:

• 6 p.m. for ballroom

• 7 p.m. for East Coast swing

• 8 p.m. for salsa

• 9 p.m. for West Coast swing

Free citizenship classes at MLT -Library

Registration is now open for the next series of free citizenship classes at the Mountlake Terrace Library. The classes begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and continue for five sessions. The Mountlake Terrace Library is located at 23300 58th Ave. W.

Taught by a trained volunteer, the classes will offer practice reading, speaking and writing as well as a review of the 100 questions on U.S. history and civics, 10 of which will be asked at an immigration interview. Class size is limited and registration is required for the five-week session.

Free tax prep and e-file at Edmonds Community College

Edmonds Community College is offering free income tax return preparation and e-filing to U.S. citizens and residents with incomes of less than $49,000.

Confidential tax return preparation will be offered on a drop-in basis through March 16 and April 3-13 in Mountlake Terrace Hall Room 212, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. No tax preparation will be done March 17-April 2. Assistance in several languages will be available. Tax forms will be provided.

Journey of Grief Support Group at Swedish/Edmonds

This six-week support group provides a safe, confidential time and place for people to learn about grief and loss after the death of a loved one. This group meets from 10-11:30 a.m. through March 1.

Auditions for Northwest Boychoir

The Northwest Boychoir will hold open auditions for new members for spring enrollment, Feb. 11 at its offices at the University Heights Community Center, 5031 University Way NE, Seattle.

Boys between the ages of 6 and 9 are eligible. No previous music or vocal training is necessary. Auditions are by appointment, scheduled through the Northwest Choirs’ office by calling 206-524-3234. Auditions are about 15 minutes long, and parents are strongly encouraged to be present.
