All the “Who will run for what?” questions will get answered next week, when candidates file for office, at either the county auditor’s office or the Secretary of State’s office.
Where a candidate files depends on the geography of a district. Legislative candidates in districts totally within the county – the 21st and 44th – file in Everett; those in districts that cross county lines – 1st and 32nd – file in Olympia.
Watch filing for county prosecuting attorney; Mark Roe, appointed when Janice Ellis resigned, is running as a Democrat; so is Fire Commissioner Jim Kenny, who has the endorsement of party officials. Unless a Republican candidate emerges, we’ll see two Democrats in the general election.
We’ll see a Republican opponent for 21st District Democratic state Sen. Paull Shin. He’s Glen Sayes, owner of Lumina Photography.
More on city council vacancies
When I wrote last week about Edmonds’ three City Council vacancies in a year and a half being rare among nearby cities, I noted that the Lynnwood Council had had to fill only one vacancy in recent years — in 2005.
A reader pointed out that in 1994, the Lynnwood Council had appointed George Janecke to fill Tina Roberts-Martinez’ seat when she became mayor.
Councilman Loren Simmonds, whom I quoted in the column, reminded me that he had responded only to my question about his experience as a Council member since 1999.
I cited Councilman Ted Hikel’s participation in the 2005 appointment and one in the early 1970s, but he reminded me that he was not on the Council in the 1980s and most of the 1990s. Hikel’s Council tenure has been 1969-77 and 1999-present.
Conservation voters: Kagi, Dunshee, Liias, Roberts
The Washington Conservation Voters recently issued new endorsements for the coming legislative elections.
The group has added Democratic state Reps. Ruth Kagi, Marko Liias and Mary Helen Roberts to its earlier endorsement of Democratic state Rep. Hans Dunshee.
Roberts and Liias represent the 21st District, including Lynnwood, Mukilteo and most of Edmonds; Kagi represents the 32nd District, including Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Woodway and part of Edmonds; Dunshee represents the 44th District, including Mill Creek, Snohomish and Lake Stevens.
County Republicans endorse Ferrie in 44th
Snohomish County Republicans have endorsed Ryan Ferrie for the 44th District state Senate seat now held by Democrat Steve Hobbs.
Ferrie and former Republican state Sen. Dave Schmidt are challenging Hobbs in the 44th District.
