The end of candidate filing for the August primary has brought new legislative candidates.

In the 1st Legislative District, five candidates are seeking retiring Democratic state Rep. Al O’Brien’s seat, and three are running for the seat Democratic state Rep. Mark Ericks is vacating.

Running for the O’Brien position are Democrats Vince DeMiero and Derek Stanford, and Republicans Sandy Guinn, Dennis Richter and Dick Lapinski. Stanford is director of analytics at a telecommunications company. Lapinski is in the insurance business.

Candidates for Ericks’ seat are Democrats Dave Griffin and Luis Moscoso and Republican Heidi Munson.

Each 32nd District position has three candidates.

Running to replace retiring Democratic state Sen. Darlene Fairley are Democratic state Rep. Maralyn Chase, former Democratic state Rep. Patty Butler and Republican David Baker, a Kenmore City Councilman.

Running for the House seat that Chase now holds are Republican Art Coday and two Democrats, Shoreline City Councilwoman Doris Fujioka McConnell and former Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu.

Incumbent Democratic state Rep. Ruth Kagi has two opponents, Gary Gagliardi, a Republican, and Stan Lippmann, running as a Democrat, though he is a Republican precinct committee officer.

The 32nd District extends from North King County into Woodway and Edmonds.

In the 21st District, Democratic state Rep. Marko Liias got a third challenger during filing week. He’s Mike Huisman, who lists his party preference as “SeniorSide Party.” Republicans Elizabeth Scott and Alan D. Tagle are also challenging Liias.

In the 44th District, Democratic state Rep. Hans Dunshee got two Republican challengers: Shahram Hadian and Bob McCaughan. Democrat Lillian Kaufer is challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Steve Hobbs and Republicans Dave Schmidt and Ryan Ferrie.

21st District Democratic state Sen. Paull Shin has two opponents, Republicans David Preston and Glen Sayes.

The 21st District includes Lynnwood, Mukilteo and most of Edmonds. The 44th District includes Mill Creek, Snohomish and Lake Stevens.

21st District Republicans endorse Borey and Scott

The 21st District Republicans have endorsed Elizabeth Scott and Ed Borey for the District’s two House seats. They didn’t choose either Republican Senate candidate.

Borey is the only challenger to Democratic State Rep. Mary Helen Roberts.

That race will appear on the primary ballot even though both will advance to November. The same is true for the 44th District contest between Republican state Rep. Mike Hope and Democrat John Boerger.
