Jackson’s Emsley-Pai sidelined by injury

Jackson baseball star Kawika Emsley-Pai, a senior, said persisting pain from a back injury will prevent him from participating in tryouts for the USA Baseball junior national team Sept. 6-14 in Atlanta.

Emsley-Pai, a catcher-pitcher-outfielder and also a standout football player, suffered a stress fracture in his lower back in May playing for Jackson’s baseball team. He’ll miss the football season, but is expected to make a full recovery by spring.

No Thursday football

Everett Memorial Stadium will not host Thursday night football games this season. In the past, the Everett School District teams— Everett, Cascade and Jackson — occasionally played a night early to allow a school to have the stadium to itself for homecoming festivities on Friday.

But district athletic director Robert Polk said three things led to a return to the Friday night double-header format: poor Friday attendance after Thursday night football games, meager Thursday crowds and a desire to give girls soccer and volleyball the Thursday night spotlight.
