Ex-Maverick earns national honor
Pacific defender Kelsey Nagel, a 2003 Meadowdale High School graduate, was named to the SoccerBuzz elite team of the week Aug. 31 for her play in the Tigers’ season-opening weekend.
Nagel led the Tigers to two shutouts, defeating Portland State, 1-0, and Long Island, 3-0. Defensively, the Tigers held Portland State to two shots in the second half and Long Island to five shots overall. Over the final 135 minutes of action last weekend, Pacific gave up just seven shots total.
Not settling for just a strong defensive performance, Nagel showed off her offensive prowess with a career day, posting two goals and five points to equal her previous season-highs in the win over Long Island. She scored in both the 33rd and 86th minute, taking advantage of set pieces in a free kick and a corner kick. She tallied an assist off of another free kick in the 74th minute as she setup senior Suzy Peterson’s first goal of the season.
E-W grad named player of the week
University of Washington junior forward Kevin Forrest, an Edmonds-Woodway graduate, was named the Pac-10 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for Aug. 29-Sept. 5.
Forrest scored three goals during Washington’s 4-1 win over Air Force. He helped the Huskies to the Nike Portland Invitational title and was also named the Offensive Player of the Tournament.
Forrest also netted two goals against UC Davis on Aug. 25, bringing his season total in just three games to five goals.
Forrest leads the conference in shots (18), shots per game (6.00), points (10), points per game (3.33), goals (5) and goals per game (1.67).
Against Air Force, Forrest started his scoring tear at 44:13, knocking the ball into the right corner of the net from 10 yards out. His second goal came just 10 minutes later on a four-yard deflection into the right corner, thanks to assists from George John and Bobbak Talebi. A free kick from 25 yards marked Forrest’s third goal.
