Seattle Stars 18-year-olds’ season ends
The Seattle Stars season ended in Surprise, Ariz. at the Connie Mack Western Regional tournament July 28.
The Orange County Renegades, the eventual champions, beat the Stars 14-5 to knock them out of the tournament with a record of 2-2.
The Stars had kept their hopes alive with a 4-3 victory over the Oakland Oaks on July 27 behind the pitching of Geoff Brown of Jackson.
Seattle opened the tournament July 26 with a come-from-behind 9-8 win over the Fullerton (Calif.) Stingers. The Stars trailed 8-1 in the fifth but rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.
A pair of Jackson graduates proved to be the difference-makers. Joey Lind’s two-run double in the seventh tied the game and Curt Nelson’s single drove in the winning run.
Later that day, the Stars lost to the Arizona Baseball Academy 6-5 after a last ditch comeback fell short. Down 6-3 with two outs in the seventh, the Stars got four consecutive singles to cut the lead to one. However, with the tying run at third and winning run on at second, the game ended on a strikeout.
Stars president Bob Rankin said several players played well, but in the end the team made too many errors and ran out of pitching.
