Edmonds-Woodway grad earns USL honor
Edmonds-Woodway graduate Ben Somoza was named to the United Soccer League’s team of the week after helping the Seattle Sounders to a 1-1 tie with the Minnesota Thunder on Saturday.
Now playing right back for head coach Brian Schmetzer, Somoza, the new boys soccer coach at King’s, often found himself marked up on Minnesota’s top forward Melvin Tarley last Saturday. Somoza held Tarley scoreless and limited him to four shots.
“Ben has been playing very well at right back,” said Schmetzer. “He’s played a few games back there for us now, I kind of threw him into the fire starting with Chivas USA and he has done a very good job.”
Somoza has played midfield for Schmetzer since joining the Sounders in 2003. The Edmonds native made the move to the back line this season after the Sounders saw five defensive players from last years championship squad retire or move on to Major League Soccer clubs.
