Western Washington University volleyball middle blocker Tiana Roma, an Edmonds-Woodway graduate, has been named a second-team College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine College Division District 8 Academic All-Star. In addition, Roma was named for the third straight year on the 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Academic All-Star team. Only three players were selected to the team for the third year in a row.
Roma, a senior from Edmonds, is a biology/secondary education major maintaining a 3.78 grade point average (4.0 scale). She was a first-team District 8 choice last year.
Roma was an honorable mention All-American and first-team AVCA and Pacific Region all-star and all-GNAC choice in 2007, helping Western place second nationally. Roma is fifth in attack percentage (.315), tied for seventh among school career leaders in kills (1,049) and is ninth in blocks (348).
The Vikings, 19-3 overall, are second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings at 11-3. They are ranked No.18 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll.
Ex-Royal shines in St. Anselm victory
Luke St. Marie, a graduate of Lynnwood High School, rushed for a school-record 241 yards to help the St. Anselm College football team beat Merrimack 48-42 on Oct. 10. The victory snapped the Hawks’ 34-game losing streak.
St. Marie, a junior running back, scored on runs of 65 and 45 yards, with the latter proving to be the winning touchdown.
St. Anselm is an NCAA Division II school located in Manchester, N.H. The Hawks are members of the Northeast-10 Conference.
Meadowdale grad named to first team
Midfielder Alec Nelson, who led the Seattle Pacific men’s soccer team in scoring this season, has been named an All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first-team all-star.
Nelson, a junior, is a graduate of Meadowdale High School. He scored five goals and had three assists to lead the Falcons (6-10-3) with 13 points.
His teammate Colin Kosco, a senior defender from Edmonds, was named to the second team.
Senior standouts settle on colleges
Edmonds-Woodway senior Cailin Fellows, an outside hitter, has committed to play volleyball for Boise State University in the fall of 2009. Fellows helped lead the Warriors to a second-place finish at the Northwest District 4A tournament.
Meadowdale senior Chris Johnson will play baseball for the University of Portland. Mountlake Terrace softball pitcher Kori Seidlitz is headed to South Dakota State University.
