SAY Golf hosting free clinic

Shoreline Area Youth Golf is sponsoring a free golf clinic for middle school and high school students June 7-10 at Jackson Park Golf Course.

A full set of clubs is not required, but golfers should bring at least a putter, pitching wedge and 6 or 7 iron.

Participants will learn the game as well as course etiquette from a golf professional and will practice their skills on the short course. Members of the Shorecrest girls and boys golf teams will be assisting the golf pro.

The clinic runs from 3:30-5:30 p.m. each day and golfers can be dropped off and picked up by the putting green. To register, contact John Martin at 206-364-8060 or via e-mail at john@interseafisheries.com; or e-mail Dana Bracht at danabracht@msn.com.

Spartans play for ice hockey league crown

The Shoreline/ Seattle Spartans will face Kamiak/ Jackson in the Western Washington High School Hockey League Division I championship game at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Kingsgate Arena.

The Spartans defeated Inglemoor 7-6 in overtime in a May 21 semifinal contest. Justin Ross scored the winning goal 1:30 into the overtime period.

Shoreline took a 3-0 lead eight minutes in before Inglemoor responded with five straight goals in the second period to grab a 6-4 edge. In the third period, Shoreline pulled its goalie and scored twice to force overtime.

Thorson leads Cal to World Series

Shorecrest graduate Kristina Thorson tossed a one-hit shutout in the NCAA Tournament Region 5 championship game to lead top-seeded California to a 2-0 win over Nebraska May 23 at Bowlin Stadium.

The victory secured the Golden Bears (50-11) a spot in the NCAA Women’s College World Series for the sixth straight year.

Thorson, who finished the regional with a 4-0 record, was named the region’s most outstanding player. The sophomore right-hander threw 28 scoreless innings, allowed just six hits, struck out 30 and walked just four in regional play.

She was perfect through six innings of the title game until Anne Steffan led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single for the Nebraska’s only hit of the game.

Thorson, an All-Pac-10 first-team selection, finished the game with eight strikeouts and no walks. She improved to 27-3 overall.

Shoreline ties EdCC for fifth

Shoreline Community College split its four games at last weekend’s NWAACC softball championships to finish in a tie for fifth place with Edmonds.

The Dolphins defeated Blue Mountain and Wenatchee Valley by matching 1-0 scores. Shoreline’s losses came to eventual champion Lower Columbia and runner-up Clackamas.
