Ice dancers win bronze
Ice dancers Joylyn Yang of Mukilteo and Jean-Luc Baker of Edmonds captured the bronze medal in the novice ice dance section of the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships held Jan. 14-24 in Spokane.
Yang, 14, and Baker, 16, represented the Seattle Skating Club. They finished with 110.06 points, just .59 behind silver medalists Danvi and Vu Pham from the Washington D.C. Figure Skating Club. The gold medal went to Alexandra Aldridge and Daniel Eaton from the Detroit Skating Club, who scored 112.22 points.
Yang, who attends Harbour Pointe Middle School, and Baker, a student at Kamiak High School, are the 2007 U.S. national juvenile (under 16) champions and the 2008 U.S. national intermediate (under 18) champions. They won the Pacific Coast Sectional championship in December, which qualified them for the national competition.
Duo plays in region tourney
Matt Reinikka and Sean Bowman, both students at Heatherwood Middle School in Mill Creek, represented Washington as members of the RIV ODP State Youth Sounders Traveling Team that competed at the Jan. 16-19 Region IV U.S. Youth Soccer Championships in Phoenix.
Competing in the 96 Division (for athletes born in 1996), Washington defeated Southern California in the regional title game, 3-2.
Reinikka and Bowman served as Washington’s team captains.
Haiti benefit set for March
Lynnwood High School and the American Red Cross host the 3-on-3 Hoops for Haiti Basketball Tournament March 6 at Lynnwood High School. The fee is $25 per team and all teams are guaranteed at least two games.
Divisions include competitive and recreational boys and girls grades 3-5, grades 6-8 and 9-12; adult men and women and masters 40+ men and women.
All games are played indoors and teams can have four players. Format is round robin play into a tournament bracket. Each player receives a T-shirt. Awards for winners of each division. There also will various competitions.
