Edmonds curler takes first place in senior class
A pair of Snohomish County curlers closed out 2007 by winning their first state championships – and one of them earned a chance to represent the United States at the World Juniors.
Matt Thomas of Everett won the junior division, and Wendall Hall of Edmonds led his team to victory in the senior class at the 2007-08 Washington State Junior/Senior Curling playdowns that concluded Dec. 30 at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle.
Team Thomas – which also included Sam Galey, Nicholas Pleasants and coach James Pleasants of Seattle, and Justin Shega of Hibbing, Minn. – defeated defending state junior champion Team Beighton twice on the tournament’s final day to gain the under-21 division title and an automatic bid to the 2008 Junior Nationals, scheduled for Feb. 2-9 at the Portage Curling Club in Portage, Wis. The winner represents the United States at the World Junior Curling Championships, slated for March 1-9 in Ostersund, Sweden.
Thomas’ group defeated Team Beighton – Sean Beighton and coach Murray Beighton of Edmonds; Derrick McLean and Ian McLean of Bothell; and Joe Purvis of Kenmore – 9-3 on the morning of Dec. 30, setting up a one-game afternoon playoff as both teams finished round-robin play 5-1.
Thomas secured the playoff victory with his final stone in the 11th end, clearing both a Beighton guard and point, and stopping for a score and an 8-7 victory — Thomas’ first state title.
Hall, meanwhile, led his team to victory in the senior division, defeating five-time defending state champion Team Knievel twice in round-robin play and beating Team Smith 8-4 in the title match.
GNAC honors Meadowdale grad
The Great Northwest Athletic Conference named Seattle University junior forward Quinn Brewe its co-Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 17-23.
Brewe, of Edmonds, helped the Redhawks to back-to-back victories over Brigham Young University-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific. She made her first start of the season against BYU-Hawaii, scoring 10 points and grabbing six rebounds, and led the Redhawks with 15 points and nine boards against Hawaii-Pacific.
Brewe, a graduate of Meadowdale High School, shared the award with Hanna Hull of Central Washington.
Edmonds Salmon organization meets
The Edmonds Laebugten Salmon Chapter of Trouts Unlimited hosts guest speaker Clint Muns, Director of Resource Management with Puget Sound Anglers at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 23 at the South County Senior Center.
