Menday ousted as coach at Shoreline

Shoreline Community College decided last month not to renew the contract of men’s basketball coach Jeff Menday, who held the job the past three seasons.

“It was best to change the direction of the program,” athletic director Doug Palmer said. “It wasn’t just an athletic department decision it was a college decision.”

The college has made an offer to a new coach and an announcement is expected soon, Palmer said Wednesday, March 26.

Palmer said he thought Menday cared about his players off the court and spent significant time working with them on their academics.

But Menday’s methods had also raised concerns in the past.

In a season evaluation in April 2006, then athletic director Ken Burrus expressed concerns over Menday’s physical contact with a player and use of “insulting and abusive language.”

In the end, the way Menday ran the program was not what the college wanted.

“It did not mesh with our philosophy on how athletic teams should be run,” Palmer said.

Menday said he had no comment.

Shorecrest hosts night game

For the first time in school history, Shorecrest will host a night baseball game tonight, Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m.

The Scots are playing Shorewood in the second game of the two-game season series.

Lights were added to the field last summer as well as a FieldTurf infield. The improvements were part of the Shoreline School District’s $149.5 million bond that was approved in February 2006.

The game is free and open to the public.
