Snohomish County Christian grad transfers to Western Washington
Former Snohomish County Christian standout Tara Holgate, a 6-foot-4 center who played last year as a redshirt freshman at Eastern Washington University, has enrolled at Western Washington University and will play for the Vikings this coming season.
Holgate, a sophomore from Everett, played in all 29 games for the NCAA Division I Eagles during the 2006-07 campaign, making 17 starts and averaging 15.4 minutes per game. She averaged 3.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game, shooting 47.4 percent from the field (45-of-95).
Holgate, who was a redshirt the previous year, averaged 24.7 points and had three triple-doubles (points, rebounds and blocks) as a senior at Snohomish County Christian. She led the Lions to the Seattle Lutheran Tournament championship, having 17 points, 20 rebounds and 14 blocks in the title game.
As a junior, Holgate was the most valuable player of the Washington All-State Game, having 14 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks. She also was a member of the Class B state all-tournament team, and was named MVP at the Mid-May Run and Battle in Seattle while playing for the Northwest Heat.
North Sound Christian’s Bunger, Brekkaa play in all-star contest
North Sound Christian’s Elyse Bunger and Nicole Brekkaa played for the West team in the annual Class 1B East/West all-star girls basketball game June 23 at East Valley High School in Spokane.
Bunger scored 10 points and had seven rebounds, while Brekkaa scored four points and had four rebounds. The East won 91-72.
Linton takes seventh at junior nationals
Meadowdale graduate Kristen Linton took seventh place in the beam at last month’s Level 10 Junior Olympic Nationals Gymnastics Championships in Mason, Ohio.
Linton scored 9.425 on beam and placed 28th in the all-around competition out of the 56 gymnasts in her age group with a score of 37.05.
