SPORTS BRIEFS: Ice Dancers advance to U.S. Nationals

  • Tuesday, November 23, 2010 3:50pm

Local ice dancers Joylyn Yang, 14, from Mukilteo, and Jean-Luc Baker, 17, from Edmonds, both students of Kamiak High School, skated to a first-place finish in the Junior Ice Dance section of the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships in Los Angeles.

The former 2007 U.S. National Juvenile (under 16) Champions, 2008 U.S. National Intermediate (under 18) Champions and the 2010 National Novice Bronze medalists, will now move on to the U.S. National Championships in January in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The couple are the only dance team who train in Washington to move on to the U.S Championships.

Yang and Baker recently returned from their first International assignment as part of “Team U.S.A” in Karuizawa, Japan, where they gained the highest footwork score in the free-dance section. As a result of the high technical score they were immediately asked by the I.C.M.S. to leave two weeks later for their second International assignment in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The couple are coached at the Olympicview Arena in Mountlake Terrace and Comcast Arena Everett by Sharon Jones Baker (Jean-Luc’s mother) a former U.K. World Team Member and Olympian (Calgary 1988) and Steve Baker (Jean-Luc’s father) a former U.K. World Team Member.
