Spring yard sale is Saturday

The first of two community-wide garage sales in Mill Creek take place Saturday, May 6, at neighborhoods throughout the city.

The event, which draws shoppers from throughout Washington state and even British Columbia, generally begins around 9 a.m., although some homes are ready earlier in the day.

Mill Creek residents can expect trouble getting into and out of their neighborhoods, thanks to likely traffic congestion in and around Village Green Drive. Sale patrons can expect traffic backups, particularly in the Highlands neighborhood, because there is only one way – 25th Avenue Southeast – in and out of that neighborhood.

The Springtree neighborhood also tends to clog early in the day because it’s the first one most shoppers hit. However, police chief Bob Crannell says traffic generally thins out as the day goes on.

Mill Creek police will be patrolling the neighborhoods along Village Green Drive to ensure shoppers are not double-parked. Police will be issuing tickets and have, in the past, impounded vehicles that were double-parked or blocking fire lanes.

Traditionally the garage sales have been held on the first Saturday in May and October. In addition to the one May 6, another one will take place Oct. 7.

The event is the longest continual community event in Mill Creek. It is not an official city event, but a grassroots one that has been promoted by the Mill Creek Community Association, the city’s largest homeowner’s association.
