SHORELINE — The kick-off for the school year begins with recognition for faculty, staff and volunteers in the Shoreline School District at the district’s annual opening day activities, taking place Aug. 30 at the Lynnwood Convention Center.
In previous years, the event consisted of a guest speaker or the superintendent welcoming faculty and staff back for the school year. This year’s speaker has made a name for himself nationally as a motivator, after attending Shoreline schools. A 1989 graduate of Shorewood High School, Erik Wahl uses art to motivate corporate and educational audiences.
The event has traditionally been held at the Shoreline Center, but this year Superintendent Jim Welsh and the district have invited volunteers from the community and schools to attend Wahl’s presentation, as well as the reception that follows. The district expects the audience to reach nearly 1,000 people. To accommodate a large crowd, the presentation will be held at the Lynnwood Convention Center, with the reception following at the Shoreline Center.
Participants will be bused from the Shoreline Center to the Lynnwood Convention Center, but taxpayers are not paying for the additional cost, nor the change in venue costs, said district spokesperson Marjorie Ledell.
She said corporate donations are paying for the event.
In addition to Wahl, the 2005 district teacher of the year, Andy Barker, and support person of the year, Debbie Gowey, will also speak at the presentation.
