A favorite emerged in the only contested race for City Council in Lake Forest Park on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The earliest numbers in this year’s general election placed candidate for position No. 2 Catherine Stanford in the lead with 58.5 percent of the votes over challenger Joe Hauth.
“I’m not a political analyst but with the reaction I’m getting I think my numbers are pretty solid,” Stanford said on Wednesday morning, Nov. 7. That being the case, she said, she will not announce a victory until the numbers are finalized.
Stanford is an 18-year resident of the city who served on the Lake Forest Park Planning Commission for ten years. She is committee chair of the Farmer’s Market, member of the Friends of Third Place Commons and part of the local governance committee for the Towne Centre. Her campaign has focused on city issues such as maintaining the character of Lake Forest Park, a sustainable city budget and the redevelopment of Towne Centre.
Her opponent, Hauth, received 41.2 percent of the votes on Tuesday night and fell further behind by 373 votes on Wednesday morning. His campaign highlighted issues including preserving the character of Lake Forest Park, environmental sustainability, the city’s enforcement of ordinances and the redevelopment of Towne Centre.
“Although I’m disappointed in the early results I’m proud of the honest and open campaign we ran and I greatly appreciated the dedication and passion of the citizens of Lake Forest,” he said.
Mayor Dave Hutchinson and councilmen Ed Sterner and Dwight Thompson were unopposed for the positions they currently hold on the Lake Forest Park City Council.
