Students should bill developers for time, effort

Thank you for the two articles on the injustice done to the EWHS students who, in good faith, spent many months working on architectural designs for downtown Edmonds.

At a minimum, the cancellation of the contest reflects a blatant disregard for the time, energy and resources expended by these students. The legal ramifications of taking, for free, these students’ ideas, models, and plans is something I urge the Edmonds School District (ESD) to pursue.

These architectural plans should be viewed as the proprietary property of the ESD as well as these students. As such, the ESD has the ability to retain lawyers to pursue Al Dykes and any other builders who are involved in this travesty against these minor children. At a minimum, they need to ensure that if any portion of these students plans show up, in any form what-so-ever, in the development of downtown Edmonds, that the students and the ESD receive compensation at the current rate of pay for architectural plans.

In addition, I suggest the students contact a local architectural company, determine the amount the company would charge for the work these students did, and then submit a bill for their hours of work to Al Dykes.
