Students win at Biotech Expo

Shorecrest and Shorewood high school students won several awards in the annual Student Biotechnology Expo in Bellevue. High school students from around the Puget Sound area entered projects at the unique science fair that draws entrants from biology, biotechnology and molecular biology classes.

The students researched a molecular level biotechnology subject and represented it through a creative project. They were judged on their ability to communicate the science concepts in an understandable, clear style through interviews, research papers and their projects. The event is sponsored by the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research. Students were assisted by advisors from the region’s biotechnology research community.

Shorecrest’s winners included: Laurisa Coffee, first place, music; Marina Stoermer, second place, art; David Leathers, second place, drama; Elisa Ahern, honorable mention, research; Eimanne El Zein, honorable mention, multimedia; Janaki Nagarajan, honorable mention, creative writing; and Nick Taflin, honorable mention, molecular modeling.

Shorewood’s winners included: Julie Oldfield, second place, creative writing; Yuka Yamamura, third place, career and industry; Frazier Mork, honorable mention, lab research; Hanna Osborne and Daniel Inouye, honorable mention, multimedia; Shawn Kim, honorable mention, Web sites; and Wilfred Chan, honorable mention, drama.
