The Jackson girls tennis team just wrapped up a season full of growth.

With only two seniors in the lineup, the Timberwolves fielded one of their youngest squads in recent years. The Wolfpack responded well to the challenge, finishing with a 5-3 record in the Western Conference South Division.

“Our season has gone really great,” Jackson coach Judi Montgomery said. “This has been a building year and a developmental year.”

Three freshmen cracked the varsity lineup, one in singles and two playing doubles. The experience the three had should only benefit them in the coming years.

Junior Jessica Mar has played No. 1 singles for most of the season. She moved up the singles ladder from a year ago when she was No. 3 or 4 in the lineup.

“She’s playing the No. 1 spot, the toughest spot,” Montgomery said. “She’s come up against some strong competitors.”

Senior Esther Oh is at No. 2 singles.

“She’s been very successful,” Montgomery said. “She’s just a nice steady player.”

The Wolfpack’s top two double teams have switched back and forth this year. Ann Lee/Deena Elaraby and Hari Kim/Kelly Corbett have battled each other throughout the season.

Jackson’s lineup for this week’s 4A District 1 tournament had yet to be determined as of Monday morning. The Timberwolves were planning to have a playoff among the team members to figure out the various postseason slots.

“Any win (at districts) is going to be icing on the cake for them,” Montgomery said. “It’s been an enjoyable season. This is maybe one of the most coachable teams ever. They’ve been just a joy. These girls truly enjoy being around each other.”
