Local public libraries in both South Snohomish and North King Counties are gearing up for their annual children’s summer reading programs. Young readers will have a number of fun options and incentives to set individual reading goals and participate in creative hands-on events at community libraries.
In south Snohomish County, the Sno-Isle Library System kicks off its “Lewis and Clark Summer Reading Adventure” with several special events at local libraries this week. Children will have the opportunity to pick up the summer reading contract, book lists and explore programs featuring circus characters, Jack and the Beanstalk and wolves.
All children who sign up receive a Lewis &Clark bookmark and two tickets to an Everett Aquasox game. Children who achieve their goal before school resumes earn a free paperback book.
Sno-Isle is also inviting adults and teens to join in on summer reading. Participation is simple: read a book, write a review (entry forms available at www.sno-isle.org/teen or at any Sno-Isle library), then turn in the review for others to read. For each review a person submits, their name will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
The King County Library System’s summer reading program is a thematic adventure titled “Read Around the World.” To get started, visit the Shoreline, Lake Forest Park or Richmond Beach libraries to pick up a “Super Summer Reading Passport,” where young readers write down the titles of the books they finish. Along the way, readers can collect 10 stickers marking their journey; at the completion of the program, libraries will have souvenirs available for participants.
During the program readers will also have an opportunity to enter drawings for two free tickets to a Seattle Storm basketball game. Entry forms and instructions are available at KCLS libraries; drawings take place on Monday, June 23, 30 and July 7.
KCLS is also partnering with Governor Gary Locke for a “Summer Reading Challenge.” Complete the challenge of reading 15 hours or more and receive a signed certificate of accomplishment from the Governor. Participants will also qualify for random prize drawings, including a trip to Disneyland. For more information on Governor Locke’s Reading Challenge, visit www.governor.wa.gov/summerreadingchallenge.
