For the first time since 2002, the Shorewood girls soccer team is going to state.

The Thunderbirds, the No. 3 seed from the Wesco South, beat Lake Stevens, the No. 1 seed from the Wesco North, 1-0 Saturday, Nov. 8 at Oak Harbor High School to advance.

“Everyone is very happy,” Shorewood’s first-year head coach Nathan Davis said.

Shorewood’s Louise Albin scored the winning goal in the 20th minute on a header off a corner by Kayli Kamacho.

“Louise got down low enough to head it around the defender and past the keeper,” Davis said. “She has really started to play well. The past four or five game she’s been our star player.”

Shorewood (14-3-2) plays Kentwood (16-0-2), the regular season champions of the South Puget Sound League North, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 at French Field in Kent.

Shorewood beat Stanwood 2-1 on Nov. 6 to advance to the winner-to-state game. Shorewood fell behind 1-0 in the game’s third minute but Albin and Sarah Clements both scored before halftime to give the T-birds the lead.

“That was a big confidence booster going into Saturday’s game,” Davis said. “I’m very confident going into Wednesday’s game. The way we’re playing I think we can shake some things up.”

HOME ON SATURDAY IF THEY WIN: The T-birds will play the winner of Woodinville-South Kitsap at Shoreline Stadium on Saturday, should they beat Kentwood.

CRUSADERS MAKE IT BACK TO STATE: Shoreline Christian, which placed second at state last year, qualified again as a No. 3 seed out of its 2B/1B tri-district with a 2-1 shootout win over Mount Vernon Christian Nov. 8.

Mount Vernon Christian missed its first penalty kick but Shoreline Christian’s Travis Hudson, Michael Sohn, Ben Novion, Jin Suk Seo and Jason Vermeer made theirs for the 5-3 advantage.

The Crusaders’ Travis Einfield scored in the 67th minute off an assist by Austin Kight to tie it and force overtime.

Shoreline Christian plays Northsound Christian in the first round of the state playoffs either Thursday, Nov. 13 or Saturday, Nov. 15,

Northsound, who will be the home team, beat the Crusaders 4-3 in the regular season and 1-0 in two overtimes in the district playoffs.

Still, Shoreline Christian coach Peter Thomsen, whose aim was to peak during the playoffs, is pleased with his team’s progress.

“We’re close to where I’d hoped to get as team,” Thomsen said. “We’re playing better as a team.”

Shoreline Christian beat King’s West 4-2 in the first round of the tri-district to clinch a state berth and then lost 1-0 to Tacoma Baptist to fall into the third-place match.

Fourteen different Crusaders have scored goals this year and six players have scored five goals or more. Travis Hudson is the Crusaders’ leading scorer with about 20 goals.

“That’s very helpful and fits in with the team emphasis,” Thomsen said.

Goalkeeper Davis Wahlman also is playing well

“He’s playing his best at any point throughout the season at a very appropriate time,” Thomsen said.

SHORELINE CC SOCCER TEAMS IN NWAACC PLAYOFFS: The Shoreline Community College men’s soccer team (6-8-4) hosts a first-round Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges playoff game against Wentachee Valley at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Shoreline Stadium. Admission is free.

The Shoreline CC women (17-1-2), the Northern Region NWAACC champion, will host a second round playoff game Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Shoreline Community College soccer field. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and Shoreline CC students. No cost for kids six-and-under.
