SHORELINE

Shorecrest could not stop the streak.

Since the 2001-2002 season, the Shorewood boys basketball team had owned Shorecrest, winning 10 consecutive games over the Scots.

Make it 11.

The Shorewood boys basketball team erased a six-point second-half deficit to rally for a 46-43 win over the Scots in a Western Conference South Division game Dec. 12 at Shorewood High School.

“We just realized we’re a better team and we started hustling,” said Thunderbirds’ senior guard Erik Lee of the fourth quarter effort. “We gained all momentum there, we stole it from them.”

Shorecrest last beat Shorewood on Jan. 23, 2001.

Lee scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the final quarter. His putback tied the score at 41 and his 3-pointer on a kick out from junior guard Taylor Hartman with about two minutes to go gave the T-birds the lead for good at 44-41.

Shorecrest forward Mark Golike, who put up a game-high 17 points, scored with 35 seconds left to cut the lead to 44-43, but Shorewood’s Tomas Sanchez converted a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining.

The Scots had opportunities to tie in the final seconds but Jose Bermudez missed a 3-pointer and Yev Zuyev’s three from the left corner glanced off the rim at the buzzer.

Shorecrest allowed too many offensive rebounds and committed careless turnovers, Shorecrest head coach Brian Fischer said.

“(The Thunderbirds) played hard and they earned the win,” he said.

Shorewood (1-3, 1-1 Wesco South) earned its first win of the season and first under new coach Shawn Hall.

“We just showed some maturity there at the end,” Hartman said. “At the beginning of the game we were rushing our shots. We just got the ball to each other.”

“It was a good first win of the season. It feels good,” he said.

Once the T-birds had the lead in the final two minutes, they kept the pressure on the Scots and despite a couple missed free throws made good decisions at the end of the game, Hall said.

“It’s all about confidence,” Hall said. “They can make these plays.”

After a sloppy first quarter in which Shorecrest (2-2, 0-2 Wesco South) found itself down 10-2 at one point, the Scots rebounded in the second period.

Forward Tanner Bean and guard Jeff Batt each hit a pair of free throws to pull the Scots within 16-15. Following a bucket by Shorewood’s Sanchez, Golike drove the hoop, scored and was fouled. Golike hit the free throw to tie the score at 18 with 26 seconds left in the half.

Shorecrest took its biggest lead of the game, 32-26 in the third quarter on a basket by Anthony Jochim with 1:48 left. Shorewood responded with an 8-0 run and retook the lead on Hartman’s basket to make it 34-32. Shorecrest jumped back on top on Zuyev’s 3-pointer with 2:50 left in the game, but Lee’s heroics gave Shorewood the edge.
