The Edmonds-Woodway football team came up short in its regular-season finale.
Seth Setterberg rushed for four touchdowns to lead Shorewood to a 34-21 victory over the Warriors in a Western Conference 4A South Division game Nov. 6 at Edmonds Stadium.
The Thunderbirds scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to break open what was a 14-14 tie at intermission.
Shorewood went to Setterberg again and again.
“They did a good job in running that kid,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach John Gradwohl. “Setterberg was tough to bring down.”
A third-quarter drive by the Thunderbirds took about 10 minutes off the clock and didn’t give the Warriors as much time as they needed.
Sean Tracey’s 1-yard run gave Shorewood a 21-14 lead. In the fourth quarter, Setterberg scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 3 yards. The senior fullback had touchdown runs of 2 and 25 yards in the first half.
“I felt like we ran out of time more than anything else,” Gradwohl said.
Edmonds-Woodway senior running back Glenn Gallagher, who finished with a school record 2,311 yards, scored on runs of 12 and 2 yards. Andrew Vaabeene connected on an 8-yard pass to Phil Baker for the Warriors’ other touchdown.
The Warriors lost their first four games to start the season but won four out of their last six.
“It says a lot about the kids and their character,” Gradwohl said. “Our league was tough. All the top eight teams really were. Anybody can beat anybody.”
Gallagher and both of the team’s quarterbacks will be graduating and as a consequence Gradwohl sees a lot of changes next year.
“This year we were going in set in a lot of positions,” he said. “Next year we won’t be as set. It’s not to say we don’t have talent. There will be lots more competition for jobs next year.”
Gradwohl will be saying goodbye to about 20 seniors who have been with the program for four years.
“They’re good kids that worked hard for years,” he said. “It’s not all about wins and losses. It’s the kids and the relationships. You never forget them … there’s a lot of memories in there.”
