PASCO — Redemption was sweet for Shorewood javelin thrower Lauren Sego, who picked up a fourth-place medal at the state 4A track meet in Pasco on May 26.

The senior’s best throw of 128 feet, 5 inches came in the preliminary round.

“I’m pleased, I’m happy,” said Sego, who came into the meet with the eighth-best throw. “I finished higher than I was seeded.”

Brittany Aanstad of Lake Stevens won the event with a throw of 141-4.

Sego was glad to end her high school on a high note after coming in seeded third last year and placing 12th.

“It’s definitely a relief,” Sego said. “I redeemed myself.”

Sego plans to attend Washington State University this fall and throw the javelin for the Cougar track team.

“It’s good to know track’s not over,” she said.

Shorewood senior Hannah Vietmeier finished 13th in the 3,200 meters in a race dominated by Mount Spokane’s Megan O’Reilly, who won in a state-record time of 10 minutes, 5.81 seconds.

Vietmeier’s time of 11:13.75 came up short of her personal record of 11:09.92 set at the district meet.

“I knew this race was going to go out really fast,” Vietmeier said. “I tried to pace myself.”

She said she ran the first mile several seconds faster than she had planned and still was in the back of the pack.

“Some of the girls are really amazing,” Vietmeier said. “It’s an honor to get to run with them.”

Vietmeier will run cross country and distances at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., next year. She’ll most likely do the 5,000 and 10,000 meters for the NCAA Division III school.

Sophomore high jumper Caroline Soules finished in a tie for 13th, clearing 5 feet. Soules came up short of her district mark of 5-4.

Junior Hanna Schliephake came in seventh in her preliminary heat of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.76.

Senior Brock Hartman, the only Shorewood boys competitor at state, finished seventh in his preliminary heat of the 300 hurdles in 41.09.
