“Tactile Extravaganza” is the new exhibit at The Gallery at the Shoreline Center now through May 6, featuring tapestry by Joyce Chandler, paintings by Paula Sweet and basketry by Judy Zugish.
Chandler has been weaving tapestries since 1995 and is presently influenced by nature and vibrant colors. The woven tapestries, averaging 30” x 30”, are designed with a mixture of library research, experimentation and the reworking of sketches and can take 450 hours over three months to create. Her hope is that the viewer will enjoy looking at the tapestry and much as she enjoyed making it.
Sweet’s acrylic paintings harmonize perfectly with Chandler’s work. For years she has been exhibiting her jewelry work nationally while quietly painting on the side. Recently, she has found that her painting has taken on a life of her own and she has been showing a body of work that incorporates birds, concepts of growth and flight and the human figure within allegorical or symbolic contexts.
Zugish is an internationally known basketry artist and co-founder of Fishticks Basketry School in Marysville. Her work is primarily about the shapes and layers of materials. Using a wide variety of barks, vines and natural materials, she likes to peel, unwrap and extract their elements, exposing the character within.
The Gallery at the Shoreline Center is located in the Community Wing of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave. NE, Shoreline and is open noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment. For more information call 206-417-4645.
