The Edmonds Fire Department was dispatched to 92 calls in and around Edmonds the week of Aug. 4-10, bringing this year’s call volume to 3,153. Medical crews evaluated 60 patients; fire crews responded to 32 incidents.

Taste of Edmonds

For three days over the Aug. 8 weekend, Edmonds’ population swelled as visitors enjoyed the annual Taste of Edmonds. Edmonds Fire Department prepares for the event in order to maintain safe and efficient response to potential incidents at the Taste, in the downtown area, and throughout the city.

During event set-up, the Fire Marshal conducts safety inspections of all vendor booths. For example, code compliance must be met for fire extinguishers, booth construction, cooking appliances, and LPG bottles.

At Station 17, rigs are parked in the bays to face west rather than east and arranged so that all three vehicles can exit out of two doors. Usually each rig has its own door.

Apparatus drivers are mindful of and alert to heavy traffic, blocked streets, crowds, and the increased number of pedestrians walking near the Taste and in the Bowl.

Medical crews can walk through a gate directly onto the field from the Station.

At the beginning of each shift, on-duty crew members walk the event with detailed maps of the entire layout. They know the location of each vendor, along with all access points in case a fire or aid unit is required to respond inside.

This year, medical crews assisted two patients attending the Taste. One patient needed help with a medical device. The other, a 25-year-old, dislocated his shoulder while pulling himself up on the rock-climbing wall.

Beach fires are illegal

Engine 17 responded to the report of several people having a campfire on the beach beneath Sunset Avenue. When the party saw the engine, they began piling sand on the fire then left the scene. Fire crews proceeded up the beach with shovels and buckets to ensure no fire remnants remained.

The city of Edmonds does not allow fires on Edmonds beaches.
