Technology resources provide startups a headstart

During the past year, I’ve been paying attention to bright spots manifesting themselves in today’s new economy. One encouraging trend is that changes in our economic climate actually have presented new and valuable resources for startup businesses.

Organizations and associations are beginning to place renewed emphasis on entrepreneurship, prompted by the realization that accelerating innovation will breed economic development and health.

In particular, I’m noticing increased confidence in the potential for today’s tech startups to play a key role in the economy’s recovery.

Throughout the past few decades, our economy has evolved and grown largely because of advancements in technology. It has become clear that to succeed, we must continue the cycle of innovation and support new ideas, even in challenging economic times.

To that end, I’m encouraged to report that there are several free and low-cost resources designed to help these fledgling companies get a jump start and build a solid foundation for growth.

Microsoft recently developed a program called BizSpark, which is designed for startups that are actively engaged in the development of a web-based product or service. BizSpark provides software, support and visibility — all critical resources for startups that too often are too expensive or difficult to attain.

Through BizSpark, entrepreneurs gain access to three years of full-featured Microsoft development tools and production licenses for server products, with no upfront costs (there is a $100 program free at the end of three years) and minimal requirements.

Instead of using valuable time raising money for technology investments, startups can immediately begin using software to develop and bring their innovations to market.

BizSpark provides support to participating startups by connecting them with Network Partners in their area. These partners have a special interest in budding software entrepreneurs and become trusted business mentors for BizSpark participants.

Participants also receive MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) based subscriptions, which provide access to an extensive set of Microsoft tools and technologies.

Achieving visibility often can be one of a startup’s biggest challenges. To help, BizSpark gives its participants exposure to a select audience of potential investors, clients and partners, as well as an opportunity to showcase their businesses in BizSparkDB, an online startup directory.

Locally, tech startups also can take advantage of the Washington Technology Center, a statewide economic development organization focused on technology and innovation.

With a mission to spark ideas, form connections between people and resources, and foster job growth in Washington, the center offers funding support, access to capital and research collaboration.

Resources for tech startups also are available through national organizations like the Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA offers extensive support to entrepreneurs, helping them write business plans, protect their ideas, acquire licenses and permits, market and price goods and services, and more.

The challenges our economy has endured in the last year have actually produced some tremendous resources and programs for entrepreneurs. There may never be a better time to launch your tech startup. Take advantage of resources to accelerate your new company’s growth and lay a solid foundation for success.
