Three hundred voters in 157 homes on Melody Hill can defeat school bonds on the ballot, but 1,324 signatures on a petition has no effect on a Mountlake Terrace “rubber stamp” Council. It is clear we don’t want our three-story zoning changed? Council, led by the “Evil Witch of the Fairytale Castle” who preaches of “amenities and visions,” has us scheduled for six-story zoning hearings on the business area near 220th Street Southwest soon. Only a short time ago at a community meeting, a citizen stated that if seven stories was allowed in the Town Center Sub Area, it would invite tall buildings all over our small city. One of our planners assured the crowd seven stories in the Town Center would be a one-time thing in our city. That plan evolved into a business zone with 4-5 stories right next to homes.
On the west side, we have been taxed since 1954 and received nada from our city. Our wetlands trail through and border along side our large industrial zone. A big, successful business area of our city lines our streets and spreads to our city boundary. The Interurban Trail meanders through this area along with 40,000 cars day. Six-story buildings will just add more traffic congestion. There is no promised park for our people because the school is all that is available. What do we get for our taxes?
Some of the city meetings lately haven’t had enough for a forum and have lasted less than an hour. “Much to do about nothing.” An occasional word from the city about their concern for the residents alerts my eye towards a council who panders to developers. Don’t let the stink of bulldozer smoke invade our quiet part of the city. They owe us! Maybe your area will be the next one for 10 stories?
