MOUNTLAKE TERRACE
It wasn’t pretty, but the Mountlake Terrace girls basketball team used any means necessary to snag a much-needed win over Shorewood at home on Jan. 23.
With the two teams jockeying for the fourth and final Class 4A District 1 playoff spot from the Western Conference South Division, the Hawks rallied for a 53-48 win.
Mountlake Terrace improved to 3-8 in the Wesco South with the win and moved a half-game ahead of Shorewood, which fell to 3-9. Terrace now owns the tie-breaker over Shorewood, having beaten the Thunderbirds 56-52 in the first meeting.
Terrace started the fourth quarter down six and had trailed by as many as seven points in the third quarter.
The Hawks corralled six offensive rebounds in the final period and scored on all six of those possessions as they outscored the T-birds 20-11.
“You saw a lot of hustle plays, kids being on the floor. That’s something we haven’t seen this year,” Mountlake Terrace coach Deidra Ducheane said. “Even my bigs were getting on the floor, which is always a tough thing for them to do. It wasn’t pretty by no means but they did whatever they had to do to win tonight.”
Corrinne Pingul scored a team-high 18 points for the Hawks and knocked down four 3-pointers. She dealt a devastating blow to Shorewood when she hit a 3-pointer with 44 seconds to go and the shot clock running down. That gave Terrace a 51-45 lead.
The Hawks also got seven fourth quarter points from point guard Emma Fritz including a basket that gave Terrace the lead for good 46-44.
After a Shorewood turnover with 1:50 left, Kori Seidlitz put the Hawks up 48-44 with 1:30 to play.
“We dug deep and got aggressive,” Fritz said. “Our guards started attacking and our posts did a great job on the rebounding. That really helped us in the fourth quarter. … Fourth quarter is generally our hardest quarter, so we really needed to focus on that quarter.”
Shorewood’s leading scorer Becky Farden had an off night shooting but drove to the hoop and drew fouls all night. She went 13-for-17 from the line en route to scoring 22 points.
“Farden, we figured we’re just let her do her thing and control it as much as we can but keep everyone else down,” Ducheane said.
Freshman guard Erin Ellersick scored 15 points and hit three 3-pointers but no other T-bird scored more than four points.
“It’s a tough one to take,” Shorewood coach Nina Lowe said. “It was kind of frantic pace, a lot of up and down on our part. We got good looks, we got good shots, they just didn’t go in. The girls played hard. They played tough defense, we broke down a little bit in the fourth, we started getting some fouls called on us that were interesting.”
Kelsey England scored four points and grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals for the T-birds.
Hawks’ senior post Katy Hinson added 12 points before fouling out with 3:53 to play.
Shorewood made 60 percent of its free throws on 18-of-30 shooting while Terrace shot 61 percent on 11-of-18 shooting.
