On behalf of the Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission, I’d like to thank Mayor Jerry Smith, Mayor Pro Tem Laura Sonmore, the City Council, city staff, sponsors, donors, volunteers and artists for making this year’s Arts of the Terrace such a big success. It was a very special year as we honored our former leaders, Sharron Berwick and Joyce Hagen. The enthusiasm for continuing the work these two women loved was contagious and the caring spread throughout our community.
Furthermore, I’d like to thank the Enterprise Newspaper for providing such excellent coverage for our event. Great newspapers reflect the values of the communities they cover and the Enterprise showed how much they merit being in this category.
I spoke with many artists throughout the region who entered our show and they told me they were very impressed with the wonderful support for the arts in Mountlake Terrace. I heard one of our jurors say, “What other art shows are there that have the mayor and mayor pro tem handing out awards to the artists.”
This very special attitude carried through even to the end as artists picked up their works from the library. When Hitomi Dames, who received awards for her photography, came to pick up her ribbons, she told the art commissioners that she wanted to speak to Richard Berwick. She said she wanted to tell him that she was going to present her photo, “Halloween,” winner of “The Sharron Berwick Memorial Award,” as a gift to him and his family.
Thanks to all for your support and caring.
Judy Ryan
Arts Commission Chairwoman
