An artful night out is planned in Edmonds from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 17 as the Third Thursday Art Walk returns, hosted every month by the merchants of downtown Edmonds.

Highlights this month include demonstrations with artists-in-action at three locations. Watch gallery owners and artists Joan Archer and Denise Cole at Aria Studio Gallery working in both watercolor and oils. Sign up for classes will also be available. Over at Gallery North, acrylic artist Carl Dummann demonstrates his technique in capturing a sense of place and the mood of the moment. His use of strong contrast within a limited pallet aids color harmony.

The third demonstration takes place at Kindred Circle Art Gallery, where a juried show of 12 top sumi artists takes place. Sumi is the ancient Japanese art form using black ink to capture the essence of nature. Edmonds sumi artist, Suzanne Turner, will be demonstrating this evocative technique. A number of these artists will be in attendance.

At Main Street Gallery, watercolorist Christine Meshew unveils new works that express nature on paper. Also meet jeweler Polly Richeson and see her newest lampwork glass beads and vessels-truly art to wear.

Next door at Salon Pena, Edmonds artist Sue Coccia has a showing of her earth art animals filled with symbols, other animals, and emblems from nature. Ambience hosts jeweler Joan Wells, who hand-cuts her glass jewelry before applying a “weathering” effect. Then it is wrapped in copper and complimented with found objects.

Metal sculpture and wood carving are on display at C’est la Vie. Fred Colon’s humorous sculptures and masks include a variety of found objects including objects such as a World War II helmet. The colorful, rustic wood carvings of Elisa Drum VanAukens are also featured.

Edmonds artist Darlene Lucas is hosted by the Edmonds Bookshop. Several larger pieces incorporating hatching and cross-hatching will adorn the walls there. Of special interest is her love of juxtaposition and layering of line as it evolves into texture. Sound Styles hosts the furniture designs of artists Caroline Blocker and Judy Bjorback, who transform vintage furniture by embellishing with colorful mosaics.

Start the walk at the fountain at 5th and Main and look for the rainbow spinners. Maps are available at all participating locations.
