Lynnwood’s City Council Monday, Aug. 11 appointed three new volunteers to serve on two commissions.

The council appointed Robert Larsen to the Planning Commission. Larsen, a senior planner with the city of Everett, served as citizen representative to the Lynnwood Visioning process, a series of community meetings in which the city sought feedback from its residents and businesses.

“What I have seen of the process so far is that citizens took seriously the opportunity to tell us what they like and would change about our community,” he wrote in his application to serve.

Council members also appointed Shirley Sutton and Tiffany Sims to the Neighborhoods and Demographic Diversity Commission.

Sims, program manager for the Edmonds Community College library, was a founding member of Families Advocating for Students of Color.

She said her work with community organizations led to her decision to apply for the commission position.

“That kind of got me thinking ‘wow, if I could be on the other side and help people, that could be exciting on a larger scale,’” she said.

Sutton, executive director of diversity affairs at the college, said she applied to the diversity commission because “to me, it’s being able to touch the people that really need help the most.”

Sutton, a native of Yakima, held several volunteer community posts in that city and her mother also was very involved in community work.

“It brings out and supports my values and beliefs as a citizen,” she said.”It’s very fulfilling to be able to help communities and individuals.”
