Three Shorecrest relays moving on to this weekend’s state meet

Shorecrest registered numerous marks at last week’s Northwest District 3A track meet that surely would garner a ribbon at state.

But in some cases, it wasn’t good enough.

Several Scots finished third and were aced out of a trip to this weekend’s Class 3A state championships in Pasco. Only the top two finishers per event received state berths.

“That part was a little frustrating,” Shorecrest coach Don Dalziel said. “You’d like to take as many kids as you can to state.”

The girls 400-meter relay team of Erin Cantini, Rachael Moore, Whitney Michiels and Chelsie Harrison clocked a school record time of 49.68 seconds in the May 23 district finals at Civic Field in Bellingham.

Though it’s one of the fastest 3A times this year, the foursome will sit out the state meet due to its third-place finish behind Sehome and Bellingham.

“We’re third (fastest) in the state, but we’re not going,” Dalziel said. “That’s hard to swallow.”

Dalziel noted that every event has an automatic state qualifying standard — except relays.

“I’d be curious to find out why that is,” he said.

Shorecrest’s other two girls relays made it through with ease. Libby Reynolds, Michiels, Haley Martin and Mickey Pelland won the 1,600 relay in 3:59.93.

No other school posted a sub-4:00 qualifying time.

“I never thought we get anybody to go under four minutes,” Dalziel said.

Martin, Moore, Michiels and Harrison took second to Bellingham in the 800 relay in 1:45.29, more than two seconds ahead of third-place Squalicum.

Pelland’s winning time of 2:18.92 in the 800 is the second-fastest qualifying time behind Bainbridge’s Veronica Ivey.

“She’s capable of going 2:13,” Dalziel said. “She hasn’t had to push too hard yet, so she should be pretty fresh at state.”

Reynolds set a school record of 59.32 in the 400 to finish second and Harrison took second in the 200 in 26.31. Amy Farquhar cleared 5 feet to place second in the high jump.

Shane Hoffman leapt 21 feet, 9 inches to win the long jump and teamed with J.D. Gardner, Jesse Hoffman and Michael Dapper for a second-place time of 3:28.97 in the 1,600 relay.

Shorecrest’s 400 relay team finished third by .05 of a second, Dapper placed third in the 100 and 200 and Shane Hoffman took third in the triple jump.

Lars Teigen finished third in both the high jump and javelin and Michiels was third in the girls 100.

“I’m pleased, but at the same time I’m disappointed we didn’t get more through,” Dalziel said. “We had a lot of third-place kids.”

Sehome claimed the girls team championship with 135 points, followed by Squalicum (88) and Shorecrest (84).

Bellingham (119) topped Sehome (111) for the boys title and Meadowdale (70) edged Shorecrest (66) for third.
