EVERETT

Way out where the buffalo used to roam a battle was being raged.

The Battle of Mill Creek.

The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats and Jackson Timberwolves squad battled it out for the Buffalo Trophy Dec. 8 at Archbishop Murphy High School with the Timberwolves coming away victorious with a 41-33 win.

Jared Mead’s 5-1 decision over Jeremy Wattam in the 103-pound class proved to be the difference for the Timberwolves.

The entire meet was a seesaw battle, as both teams traded leads toward the end of the meet.

The match at 160 pounds was typical. Jackson’s Rodewrick Grey and Murphy’s Collin Huggins went back and forth before Gray finally pinned Huggins one minute, 30 seconds into the third round.

“One guy was on his back and then the other flipped the other on his back, it went back and forth,” Archbishop Murphy coach Blaine Gilchrist-Smith said.

It was the first year of the Battle of Mill Creek and the two schools hope to continue the tradition next season at Jackson High School.

“People walked away (saying) what a neat experience it was and that just wasn’t possible four years ago,” said Gilchrist-Smith, who started the Wildcat program in 2003.

The Battle featured a sumo wrestling match between teachers from both schools, and a trophy ceremony at the end.
