‘Tis the season to give … until others don’t hurt anymore

We are now entering the “season of giving” — the holidays.

This is usually the time when the food banks and shelters are stock full of gifts, products and food to help others in need.

But this year, this isn’t so, according to different social service groups in South Snohomish and North King Counties.

Maybe it’s because of the removal of some federal and/or state level funding to these services or maybe there are more people in need than usual.

Whatever the reason, too often people rely too much on government social services to get this job done when it really is the responsibility of the community.

It’s the responsibility of you and yours to pull something off your own shelf or out of your own wallet and hand it over to the services organized to make a difference.

Every small bit does help. If everyone were to just take a dollar or a can of food to their local food bank, church, social service office—wherever they trust— it would make a big difference. That’s a lot of dollars and canned food.

Take the initiative to check up on that elderly neighbor or that single Mom or Dad in your apartment complex. Try to be a little more tolerant to those kids on your block who seem to have no parental supervision.

Give more than you think you can and then when you think that’s too much stretch out a little — and give more.

Giving any time of the year is a good thing to do—but in particularly this time of year is the last time of the year we want someone going without.
