When the going gets tough, libraries get you going. Sno-Isle Libraries provides a number of free tools and resources to help customers get through challenging economic times.
Sno-Isle Libraries introduces a new Web page dedicated to making life easier at work, at home, or at play: search for a job, get small business help, stay on a budget, do-it-yourself home repair, plan free activities for the family, and much more. On the www.sno-isle.org site, click on Tools for Tough Times under Special Features for a selection of recommended books and Web sites. Premium content is available online with a library card. While the big search engines can provide listings for many sites, Sno-Isle’s premium content comes from known, trusted sources vetted by professional librarians.
Library computers and free Internet access play a vital role in searching and applying for employment, preparing resumes, and filing for unemployment benefits. First-time computer users can take classes to learn how to use a mouse or how to set up an email account, and librarians are available for one-on-one assistance.
Sno-Isle Libraries also offers programs designed to provide professional guidance to the community such as workshops led by a job search strategist, a financial advisor, or worker retraining representatives from area community colleges.
Upcoming Sno-Isle Libraries’ programs:
– Worker Retraining Forum, August 17, 2 p.m., Lynnwood Library
– Interviews That = Job Offers, September 27, 2 p.m., Lynnwood Library
– Computer Classes for Beginners, ongoing, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Monroe, and other Sno-Isle Libraries

Local Red Cross A Top Chapters
The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been ranked one of the best performing chapters in the country by the organization’s national headquarters, according to Chuck Morrison, chapter executive director. The recognition of “Highly Performing Chapter” was given to only 39 of 720 Red Cross chapters nationwide. The Chapter has been designated in the top echelon in two of the last three years.
Selection was based on disaster response capability, management within operating budget, volunteer, employee and board capacity, building community partnerships, and community awareness of chapter services. Other criteria included challenges the chapter faced and its strategies for meeting them.
Services provided by the chapter in 2008 included response to 92 house fires, 10,324 people trained in Red Cross health and safety courses, 581 military families assisted with 1,798 services, and 1,015 Snohomish County residents helped with payment of utility bills through Project Pride.
