Volunteer to drive for Senior Services

Volunteers can help seniors in the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park communities remain independent by becoming a volunteer driver for Senior Services Shuttle Program. The Program is seeking reliable, caring individuals to drive agency vans.

Flexible hours and free training in defensive driving and passenger assistance are provided. Volunteers do not need a special driver’s license and do no lifting or bearing of weight. Bilingual drivers are especially encouraged to apply. Call Melissa at 206-748-7588 or 1-800-282-5815, e-mail melissat@seniorservices.org, or visit www.seniorservices.org for more information.

Party with the stars

The Seattle Astronomical Society is hosting its free monthly public star party Saturday, Sept. 6, at Paramount Park at Northeast 155th Street and 8th Avenue Northeast in Shoreline.

Club members will set up their telescopes around 7 p.m. Members of the public are encouraged to drop by and have a look at what’s in the sky.

Poor weather will cancel the star parties. For more information, visit the Seattle Astronomical Society Web site at www.seattleastro.org, or e-mail information@seattleastro.org.

Volunteer for a service program

Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC), an affiliated teen service program of Camp Fire USA, is looking for teens, age 11-18, who are interested in community service work this summer and fall. This is an opportunity for teens to give back to their neighborhood and community.

YVC has projects all over King County including Operation Sack Lunch; helping seniors at Elderhealth; painting bus shelter murals, preparing for Night Out Against Crime and more. A complete list of projects is available at: www.yvckingcounty.org.

Projects have a limited amount of space and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration forms may be downloaded from the Web site and mailed to the address indicated or faxed to 206-525-3351. For more information call 206-461-8550 or e-mail gracem@campfire-usa.org.

Sustainability Strategy online

The City Council took a bold step toward creating a better future for Shoreline residents by unanimously adopting a Sustainability Strategy in July. The strategy provides the City with new tools to help meet its goals of stewarding natural resources, reducing waste and energy consumption, promoting green building and conserving resources throughout the community.

The Sustainability Strategy document is available online at www.cityofshoreline.com
