Edmonds-Woodway appears poised to be the Edmonds District girls golf team with the best prospects of making a splash at the upcoming district tournament.
The Warriors return three players who advanced to last year’s Class 4A state tournament and the three – Corey Rois, Hannah Lauber and Sarah Vlasic – should again be solid contenders.
“They’ve all been playing well,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Matt Caldwell said.
The three also excel in the classroom and helped lead the Warriors to the Class 4A state academic championship in 2009.
Mountlake Terrace’s top golfer is junior Lizzy Strauss, a three-year letter winner.
Strauss advanced to the second day of districts and was close to earning a state berth.
Mountlake Terrace coach Jayson Hart is looking for Strauss to continue to elevate her game and make a push for state.
The Hawks’ No. 2 player Kendall Collins is right on the heels of Strauss.
The two 3A teams, Lynnwood and Meadowdale, both have plenty of newcomers but also individuals with state tournament potential.
The Royals are led by senior Bethany Holm and junior Natalee Holt. Holm made it to the second day of the district tournament.
“She’s really determined to make it this year,” Lynnwood coach Glenn Chinn said.
Unfortunately, Holm appears to have suffered a serious back injury in a non-golf related mishap. Chinn was unsure of her status for the rest of the year.
Holt has shown significant improvement from a year ago and just seems to enjoy the game more, Chinn said.
“She’s really enjoying every facet of the game,” he said.
Another player with plenty of potential is junior Lindsey Gahl.
Meadowdale’s top postseason prospects are juniors Sarah Perkins and Kaylee Cram. Both have been playing on varsity since their freshman seasons.
“They both made it to the second day (at districts) and then didn’t have a good second day,” Meadowdale coach Chris Huddleson said. “Both are planning on making it this year.”
Districts are scheduled to start on May 18.
