Two fires occurred in Shoreline between Sept. 16-19, in what could be characterized as a hot stretch.
No one was injured in either instance.
The first fire occurred at 7:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 at a small home in Richmond Beach. A man was driving in the 200 block of Richmond Beach Road when he saw smoke coming from what looked like the hillside, said Shoreline Fire Department spokesperson Melanie Granfors. He called 911 and fire crews were sent to the site.
A single man, who rents the house, was at work at the time of the fire. Fire crews were able to rescue the man’s kitten.
“The house was pretty much destroyed,” Granfors said. “They were able to get the fire under control, but it had really been going by the time we got there.”
The cause of the fire was determined to be a salmon smoker, which the man had unplugged. He had removed the salmon, but there were remaining wood chip embers in the smoker that smoldered for awhile and started a fire on the porch area, which eventually spread to the house, Granfors said.
Edmonds and Northshore fire departments assisted in the fire.
The second fire was contained in a detached garage and occurred 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19 at a home in the Innis Arden neighborhood, in the 18100 block of 14th Avenue NW. The homeowner reported his garage on fire, said Granfors, as did several neighbors who reported flames and smoke.
The fire was controlled in about 20 minutes and the 89-year-old homeowner was not injured.
The fire began in the man’s car after he started the engine and then returned to his house for a few minutes, according to a press release. When he returned to the detached garage, the vehicle and building were in flames.
