Archbishop Murphy returns three top golfers this season: senior Mitch Kane, junior Cameron Zwaller and senior Brian Mitchell.

Kane, who placed sixth in the Class 2A state tournament as a sophomore and just missed making it to state last year, shoots below par, coach Jack Serwold said.

Zwaller shoots about 38 on nine holes while Mitchell averages about 39.

“The three boys have the potential of going on to state,” Serwold said. “They’re all improving and getting better.”

Nineteen golfers from 12 schools in District 1 qualify for the boys state tournament to be held May 22-23 at Bellingham Golf &Country Club.

Serwold said up to 30 players are good enough to make it to state from the district.

“There’s a lot of fine players in the (Northwest League) and a lot of fine players in (the Cascade Conference),” Serwold said.

Lakewood and South Whidbey, both 2A schools, are experienced and the teams to beat in the Cascade Conference.

The Wildcats have a supporting cast of seven players, junior Brady Reddington, junior Jeff Davis, senior Austin Redman, sophomore Chase Larsen, freshman Sam Hogenson, freshman Joey Green, junior Pat Hinwood and junior Andre LaMarre.

“They’re all pretty good but they’re not quite the caliber of the first three,” Serwold said.

Kane, Zwaller and Mitchell lead the rest of the players, Serwold said.

“They help coach the other kids,” he said. “All the time they’re working with the other kids and trying to make them better.”

On the girls side, the Wildcats are led by junior Michelle Grome, who qualified for state last year. Grome did not make the cut at state, but has improved a lot, working on her game over the summer, Serwold said.

Sophomore Erin Gogal, an alternate to state last year, is the team’s No. 2 player.

Junior Erica Frahm and junior Melissa Myers also will play key roles on the varsity.
