A fire destroyed a one-story home near the southeast shore of Martha Lake on Thursday morning, April 27, displacing the two women who lived there.
Flames and smoke were already coming out of the back of the house in the 500 block of Pitner Road when firefighters arrived about 5:10 a.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
Both of the women who lived there were treated for smoke inhalation at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds. One of the women told a dispatcher she did not want to leave the burning house because her cats were still inside, Hynes said.
At least one of their cats survived, but two cats died.
“If there is a fire in your house, you need to leave immediately for your own safety, even if your pets are inside,” Hynes said. “Fire grows more quickly than most people think, and pets often will hide when there’s a fire. By staying in a burning house to look for your pet you are putting your own life at risk.”
The house is a total loss, fire officials said. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office. The homeowner has insurance and is being assisted by the Red Cross. Crews from Fire District 7 assisted in putting out the fire.
