SHORELINE — Shorewood stormed into the Northwest District 4A girls soccer playoffs on the heels of perhaps its biggest win of the season.

But the momentum the Thunderbirds generated by handing Western Conference South Division co-champion Jackson its first league loss faded fast.

Lake Stevens punched in an early goal and held on for a 1-0 win over Shorewood in Monday night’s loser-out contest at Shoreline Stadium.

It was just the fourth time in 17 outings the Thunderbirds were held scoreless this fall.

Anna Kruse directed a Kendra Anyan cross past Shorewood goalkeeper Cara Edmund in the 11th minute for the Vikings, who advanced to face Snohomish in the semifinals.

Shorewood upped the pressure in the second half, but couldn’t capitalize on its scoring opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Cassy Osborn recorded the shutout for Lake Stevens.

The Thunderbirds closed out the regular season with a 1-0 victory over Jackson to earn the division’s third seed to the district tournament.

Junior midfielder Gabrielle Davis scored the lone goal in the 60th minute off a pass from Tess Bartlett and Rachel Eckerlin was credited with the shutout in goal.

Jackson hadn’t lost since a preseason matchup with Shorewood a month earlier. The defeat dropped the Timberwolves into a tie with Shorecrest for the league title.

The Thunderbirds finished the season 9-6-2 overall and lose four seniors to graduation.
