LAKE STEVENS — For the Lake Stevens Vikings, the only goal is a road trip to Tacoma on March 8.
With a convincing 65-45 victory over the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors Feb. 21 in a 4A District 1 opening-round contest, they are one step closer and one step away.
With the win, Lake Stevens travels to Marysville to play Jackson in a winner-to-state game at 6 p.m. tonight (Friday, Feb. 24).
The Vikings, the Wesco North’s No. 1 seed, staggered a bit out of the gate, as their aggressive press resulted in early foul trouble.
Sharp perimeter passes from E-W guards Jennifer Singh and Jessica Takara kept Lake Stevens off balance from the opening tip.
Thanks to two Singh 3-pointers and a Kristen Lee put back off a missed free throw, the Warriors had a 15-13 lead with two minutes remaining in the opening period as the spirited Vikings crowd looked on anxiously.
Vikings forward Ashley Housden immediately responded with a 15-foot jumper to tie the score and jump start an 18-2 run over the next 11 minutes to give Lake Stevens a commanding 31-17 lead.
The second half featured more of the same, as Lake Stevens’ lights-out transition game ensured it a comfortable margin of victory.
The noticeable key to Lake Stevens’ success was in keeping Takara stifled all night. The Wesco South’s third-leading scorer was held to eight points on a bucket less than two minutes into the game and a pair of impressive 3s in the second half after the Vikings had built a solid double-digit lead.
