Voters elect council members, not mayor

As I talk to many people in our city, I have learned there is often a misconception as to our city form of government. Mill Creek, upon incorporation in 1983, chose to have a city council-city manager governmental body.

In November, we in Mill Creek will be electing our representatives to the Mill Creek City Council. As you cast your vote for these positions, do not be confused. You are voting to elect council members and not a mayor. With our city council-city manager form of government, a mayor is selected by a majority vote amongst the current council members in January every two years. The next two years, the mayor chairs the meetings and serves as the ceremonial figurehead for the city. The city manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city. The citizens of Mill Creek do not vote for the mayor. All seven members of the city council have equal power, voice and vote.

Our city’s form of government was selected knowing that most of the council members would be very busy with their own personal lives and activities, that the council positions would require special dedication in setting the “philosophy” and direction of our city for the work of a full-time professional manager and city staff. The city council sets the policy and the city manager makes it happen. The “boss”: the city council. The CEO: the city manager. We have been and are blessed with great professional city managers and staff. Let’s let the system work.

Former mayor, cities of Mill Creek and Brier
