Rep. Maralyn Chase and Republican challenger Alex Rion won the top two spots in the 32nd legislative district’s position one primary race.

Results on Wednesday, Aug. 20, showed Chase winning 64.6 percent of the vote, and Rion winning 25.8 percent. Challenger Margaret Wiggins fell behind with 9.3 percent of the vote.

Chase and Rion will face each other in the November general election. Rep. Ruth Kagi is unopposed for position two.

The 32nd legislative district includes Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, a portion of Edmonds and the town of Woodway.

Voters also approved a property tax levy lid lift for Shoreline Fire District. Prop 1 restored the levy to $1.50 per $1,000 for the next six years.

More than 12,000 residents will have the opportunity to vote for their Ronald Wastewater District commissioners following voter approval of an initiative that gives all Ronald Wastewater ratepayers the right to choose their three commissioners and run for a commissioner position.

Sustainability Strategy online

The City Council took a bold step toward creating a better future for Shoreline residents by unanimously adopting a Sustainability Strategy in July. The strategy provides the City with new tools to help meet its goals of stewarding natural resources, reducing waste and energy consumption, promoting green building and conserving resources throughout the community.

Major objectives of the Sustainability Strategy include:

•Manage expected growth in a sustainable way

•Address impacts of past practices

•Proactively manage and protect ecosystems

•Improve and expand waste reduction and resource conservation programs

•Implement energy solutions that are key to reducing our carbon footprint.

The first step to implementation is to reconvene the City’s Green Team as a permanent part of the organization. This team of City staff will guide implementation of the strategy recommendations and coordinate departments and projects to ensure that goals are met.

The Sustainability Strategy document is available online at www.cityofshoreline.com and will be available for purchase on paper or CD this fall. For more information, contact Project Manager Juniper Nammi at 206-801-2525 or jnammi@ci.shoreline.wa.us.
