Edmonds-Woodway’s Ashley Wagner and Joleen Laue won one of three matches at last week’s Class 4A state doubles tournament.
The Warrior duo opened with a 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 first-round victory to advance to the quarterfinals but then dropped their next two matches.
Wagner and Laue went in with fairly high expectations.
“I thought they could have done better, but I’m not unhappy with them,” said Edmonds-Woodway coach Dan Crist.
This was Wagner’s second time at the state but Laue’s first experience there.
“(It was) really exciting,” Laue said. “The competition was really intense, I like having new challenges and hope to go back next year.”
Laue was a little tense during the first match, but settled down.
“I think a lot of it was doubles inexperience,” Crist said. “They were mostly singles players.”
Laue’s view of the state championship was positive.
“Yes, I am really happy and thought I played well, and if I train hard, then we will be a strong force,” Laue said. “I’m happy that we got to state in the first place.”
