Edmonds-Woodway overcame a late goal to defeat Meadowdale 3-2 in overtime May 28 in the Western Washington High School Hockey League Division II championship game.

The Warriors (7-1) avenged their only defeat of the season by closing out the Mavericks with a breakaway goal by Brian Morgan two minutes into overtime.

With the victory, Edmonds moves on to play Pasco in the state championship game June 6 at Lynnwood Ice Center.

An early 1-0 lead was wiped away when Mavericks wing Max Edwards chipped in a goal late in the second period past goalie Parker Mrozek. Edmonds-Woodway responded with just over nine minutes remaining as Monica Jones found a rebound and poked it under the pad of Jeff Snowden.

The Mavericks answered by stepping up the pressure as their season was slowly slipping away. Meadowdale controlled the action for the next eight minutes.

With just one minute remaining, Matt Geddes notched the tying goal past an exhausted Warriors defense. The Mavericks weren’t done yet as they kept up the pressure for the final minute and early in the sudden-death overtime period.

Robbie Bissett gathered in an errant shot and found Morgan moving up the far side. He beat one defenseman and went in unobstructed to score the winner on a backhand shot over the goalie’s shoulder.

For Edmonds-Woodway, Morgan had two goals; Bissett and Tyler Schorzman each has a pair of assists.
