LAKE STEVENS — Two things were proven when the Marysville-Pilchuck boys soccer team defeated the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors in a Class 4A District 1 playoff game.
The Tomahawks can win a playoff game and M-P goalkeeper Kaleb Kuehn can come through in the clutch.
The Tomahawks defeated Edmonds-Woodway 2-1 in penalty kicks May 8 at Lake Stevens High School.
After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime, the game went to penalty kicks to decide a winner.
In the shootout both teams scored on their first two penalty kick attempts. Edmonds-Woodway’s goalkeeper Ian Michaels-Slettvet saved Tomahawks No. 3 shooter Tyson Farley’s shot off the goal line with a diving stop to his right, putting the pressure squarely on Kuehn’s shoulders.
With the Warriors leading 4-3 in the shootout, Kuehn, who is an Olympic Development Region 4 goalkeeper, responded with a diving save to his right on Michaels-Slettvet’s attempt. Kuehn then picked himself up and put his own try into the back of the net to extend the shootout into sudden death.
The Tomahawks’ sixth shooter Jordan Salcedo buried his kick into the upper right corner of the goal after the Edmonds-Woodway shooter had missed to seal the 5-4 shootout victory.
